The North Carolina Flood Mapping Program, along with the National Flood Insurance Program, is updating Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) for all of Randolph County. FIRMs show Special Flood Hazard Areas based on the best available information. The current maps have been in effect since January 2, 2008 and are required by law to be updated periodically.
Citizens are encouraged to view the current and preliminary flood maps using the NC Flood Risk Information System (FIRS) website. To see the preliminary maps, select the option at the top of the screen that says "Effective" and change the Map View to "Preliminary." Educating yourself about flood risk can help to protect yourself and your property.
If you find that your property might be in a newly designated Special Flood Hazard Area, a lender may require you to purchase flood insurance in the future; federally-backed mortgages typically will require such insurance.
