The Asheboro City Council accepted/adopted the North Asheboro Greenway Feasibility Study at its regular July 2024 meeting. The accepted/adopted study with addendum may be viewed HERE

OVERVIEW

The City has begun a feasibility study for the North Asheboro Greenway, a proposed 1.8-mile-long corridor, beginning at Vision Drive and running north along Haskett Creek to West Central Avenue. The route will prioritize use of existing sewer line easements and pass through floodplain areas. The potential route also traverses commercial properties, large rural residential lots, and open space associated with Homeowners Associations and Institutional uses. As part of the study, the City plans to identify and work with property owners willing to consider granting the necessary easements for the greenway.

A connection is desired to North Asheboro Park, which could also function as a trailhead. Another connection is desired to Balfour Elementary School and North Asheboro Middle School. The connection to the schools would follow the West Bailey Street public right-of-way from the Haskett Creek bridge to North Asheboro School Road. All areas of the proposed greenway are located solely in the Asheboro corporate limits. The North Asheboro Greenway Feasibility Study will evaluate potential route scenarios along roadways and off-road corridors to determine the preferred route. The study will also develop cost estimates and an implementation plan to construct the greenway. The project is led by the City of Asheboro with NCDOT as a supporting partner.

WHAT IS A FEASIBILITY STUDY?

The purpose of the feasibility study is to envision future bicycle and pedestrian connectivity within the study area, identifying opportunities, constraints, and recommendations for future implementation. The study will develop and analyze conceptual routes, pinpoint a preliminary preferred route, provide cost estimates, and outline an implementation plan for future trail construction. More detailed design work and, potentially construction, would take place in future years.

POTENTIAL FACILITY TYPES

Paved Greenways / Shared-Use Paths: A greenway or shared-use path provides an area separate from motorized traffic for bicyclists, pedestrians, wheelchair users, skaters, joggers, etc. Greenways offer network connectivity opportunities beyond the roadway network, as they are often located along streams, in utility corridors, and parks. This facility is paved and typically 10-feet wide. 

Sidepath: A sidepath is a bi-directional shared-use path adjacent and parallel to a roadway. Sidepaths offer a low-stress experience for bicyclists and pedestrians along network routes with high-speed or high-volume traffic. This facility is paved and typically 10-feet wide.

COMMUNITY SURVEY

The City of Asheboro and partners solicited community input on the North Asheboro Greenway Feasibility Study over a period of five weeks during the months of October and November. Community members provided feedback by taking an online survey or completing a paper survey. Survey results are available HERE.

PUBLIC WORKSHOP

The project team hosted a public workshop related to the ongoing Feasibility Study on December 12, 2023 from 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM. The workshop was an informal drop-in style format and was held at the Asheboro Public Works building located at 1312 N. Fayetteville Street. Mailed notice of the meeting was sent to property owners within 1000 feet of Hasketts Creek within the study corridor. Input received from the workshop will be incorporated into the study and ultimate recommendations.
